CHAN: Western Europe was feeling the chill yesterday as the effects of a cold front sweeping the continent produced themselves felt. STORY: Across the north and east of Spain men and women woke up to a blanket of snow covering fields, roads and homes, making travelling situations hazardous. In certain areas using snow chains on vehicles and trucks is now essential. In Madrid the thermometer dipped beneath zero. Spanish media predict temperatures to reach as low as minus ten degrees Celsius in parts of Catalonia. But it was not all undesirable news as young children enjoyed throwing snowballs. Up to 40 centimeters of snow has fallen across northern Italy given that Tuesday, slowing people’s return from holidays by train, plane and automobile. Bulldozers fought to clear highways as further snow fell in Milan. Targeted traffic in some parts of the city was halted from trees that fell under the weight of the snow. France is experiencing a cold weather snap that has progressively moved from north to south. Heavy snowfall paralyzed all train and bus traffic in France’s second-largest city, Marseille, on Wednesday. In Germany, icy temperatures and snowy weather have brought back icebreakers to Berlin’s lakes and rivers. On Wednesday, icebreaker “Oder” cut by means of the layers of frozen water on the river Spree, keeping it open for shipping particularly for the big coal transporters that feed the energy stations. Southern England is experiencing colder temperatures than Iceland or Greenland. Temperatures got down to minus twelve
