Alps, a destination for sightseeing and sports – France – Winter 2002
The lower regions and larger towns of the Alps are well served by motorways and primary roads, but higher passes and by-roads can be treacherous even in summer time. A lot of passes are closed in winter. A multitude of airports about the Alps (and some inside), as effectively as long-distance rail links from all neighbouring countries, afford huge numbers of travellers simple access from abroad. The Alps generally see more than 50 million visitors a year.
rails & ramparts of Aigues Mortes

Our boat passed the railway swingbridge at ground level, caught my consideration! Afterwards, I realised one could also see the ramparts that for centuries have surrounded the old town of Aigues Mortes – after a port from which crusades set off for the East but now 15 km from the sea. The old town is nevertheless within the old fortifications.
