Why can’t we buy the fuel efficient vehicles that are sold in Europe by Ford, Honda and BMW.?

Question by beemerdave: Why can’t we buy the fuel efficient vehicles that are sold in Europe by Ford, Honda and BMW.?
The same vehicles that are sold here are sold with these monsterous horsepower. Is that so the Car & Driver review doesn’t call them a slug because it take 4 more seconds to reach 60 mph. Because I could care less about getting to 60mph in 9 seconds vs. 5 seconds. If I could drive past three more exits before refueling. And yes I would love for the Diesels that are sold in Europe to be sold here. It is a much more sustainable fuel than Petro (Gasoline). It burns much more efficient and with todays technology cleaner than gasoline. All in all Diesel is a much more energy effecient energy package than Gasoline. I thenk that the baby boomers will get over the 1970’s Oldsmobile mistakes and jump all over a 52mpg Honda Accord. If the US auto industry wanted to make a comeback with the American public, they should offer a fuel efficient Diesel alternative power train in everything they sell, why not they do it in Europe.

Well maybe you think diesels are great and don’t care about horsepower. I do. I hate diesels and will never own one. Gas mileage is the very last thing i think about when looking at a car. And 0 to 60 is very important to me. As far as I am concerned those slow, smelly, smokey and expensive to maintain diesels can stay over there.
